Pests are one of the most persistent threats to sugarcane production, causing significant losses in both yield and quality. Their presence not only affects plant health but also poses risks to worker safety and increases production costs—especially when chemical controls become the primary line of defense. In many cases, heavy reliance on pesticides can also lead to environmental degradation and pest resistance over time.

This module is designed to introduce producers, extension officers, and field technicians to effective and sustainable pest management strategies that are tailored to the Belizean sugarcane context. Emphasis will be placed on preventive approaches, such as selecting pest-resistant varieties, monitoring and early detection, and applying Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles. IPM promotes the responsible use of biological controls, cultural practices, and targeted chemical applications, helping farmers reduce their dependence on synthetic pesticides while protecting their crops.

Participants will learn best practices to ensure high yield and quality in successive ratoon crops through proper field preparation, weed and pest control, nutrient management, and timely cultural operation.
